Marina and the Diamonds: Electra Heart

Published May 13, 2013 by proxycore

Hello water creatures of all sizes, shapes and colour! And humans as well~

The Overlord has been rather fed up lately. It is already so close to the end of the year that I can’t really bring myself to do schoolwork anymore. The hot weather and impending freedom that the summer promises has already completely melted what I had of a brain. But not to worry! I still have the remnants of what resembles a heart. That is…before Marina and the Diamonds stole it away.

After stumbling upon the song ‘Primadonna’ through one of Michelle Phan’s make up tutorials on YouTube, I was addicted to it for a good few weeks. But it wasn’t until lately that I explored her other songs, and by now I can almost say I love her as much as Lana Del Rey. I was listening to her Album ‘Electra Heart’, and I was surprised to find that I actually loved every song on the album. This is a rather rare occurrence, as usually there are a couple songs that I don’t really favor an any given album, even the ones by my favorite artists (except for Lana of course). Marina has a voice that is distinct and a look that is unique. My new favorite song by her is called ‘Starring Role’.

‘It almost feels like a joke to play out the part
When you are not the starring role in someone else’s heart
You know I’d rather walk alone, than play a supporting role
If I can’t get the starring role.’

The lyrics are really perfect. Lana and Marina are the two artists who have consistently been able to touch me with their lyrics. My second favorite song on the album right now is probably going to have to be ‘State of Dreaming’. The first thing that caught my attention was how different her voice seemed in this song. It was a lot softer than her other songs. The second thing that drew me in was how perfect the lyrics seemed to adhere to me. It’s true, the talent of an artist really is dependent on how they connect to their audience through their words.

‘I live my life inside a dream
Only waking when I sleep
I would sell my sorry soul, if I could have it all’

It’s amazing how these lyrics seems to connect so intimately to each individual, yet still connects to so many people. Maybe one day, I can create lyrics that are like this as well haha.

Anyways ladies and gentlemen, Marina and the Diamonds.

The Great Gatsby: Young and Beautiful

Published May 9, 2013 by proxycore

Hello mer-folk and land-walkers~

So…I guess I unintentionally lied to everyone. It seems that there wasn’t something special posted after the IB exams on my birthday. Well as an explanation for that, for some reason I couldn’t get the programs I used for recording to actually work with my microphone and not mess with sound quality. I fiddled around with it for the previous weekend but I couldn’t figure out what exactly was the problem. But the good thing now is that I’ve gotten my desktop running and hopefully things will work better there! I’ll try to give it a shot again this weekend~

The Yeti microphone is amazing though, I can use the headphone jack directly built into the mic to hear myself while I record. Needless to say, the quality I hear from the headphones is significantly better than the one my programs record for some reason. It was so good that when I used the microphone on Skype with my friends, they could hear me opening and closing my mouth (like the moisture from my mouth or something). Thoroughly embarrassing….. but it is a good indicator for how well the microphone picks things up.

Anyways, onto some content. Does anyone ever notice how when the heat of summer comes along and the end of the school year arrives, people just end up becoming limp bodies and nothing you plan gets done? I had planned to watch Ironman 3 but that keeps getting postponed…. I was convinced that I would watch it opening night but clearly that didn’t happen. Oh well, I will watch it within the month.

Another movie is coming to theaters tomorrow that has been getting quite a bit of attention lately. You’ve guessed it, it is the only movie where you can see Spider-man acting with the boy from Titanic while listening to some Lana Del Rey; ‘The Great Gatsby’.

I’m not to sure on whether or not I want to see this movie though, it looks quite interesting and it’s hard to pass up anything with a time frame around the Roaring Twenties. Where else are you going to enjoy the ideas of a flourishing economy and beautiful jazz music all mixed in with the perfect amount of crime and rum-running? Either way, the movie is still based off of a book and generally I would prefer to read the book before seeing the movie. Either way, I will most definitely have to watch it eventually. Lana Del Rey had sealed the deal.

Like pretty much every other Lana Del Rey, this one is a masterpiece. I had given a shot at covering a couple of her songs like ‘Radio’ and ‘This is what makes us girls’ and it just didn’t come out right. And it wasn’t just because the sound quality was compromised, Lana’s songs are hard to properly cover. Maybe when I have more training…

Until then,

Lana Del Rey

Hello again water creatures and land monsters~

This is probably the first time I’ve posted so closely together. I was told by my friend that I should post more often so here it is! I’m going to try to post 3 or more times a week and hopefully be able to keep more people entertained. Anyways, today I’d like to introduce to everyone the latest artist that I’ve fallen in love with.

A while back while searching up serial killer documentaries on Youtube (I can’t be the only one who does this…it’s interesting stuff after all!), I came across Lana’s song ‘Serial Killer’. I instantly fell in love with it, the lyrics and her voice was perfect and of course I could joke around saying it was a song about me. Don’t worry, I’m not really a serial killer….that you know of at least ~

After that I’ve been listening to more and more of her other songs, and let me just say that she is a true poet. Her lyrics are perfect and her music delivers emotions to me that no other artist can. When I chose music to listen to, I generally look for artists that can move me strongly. With some artists it was their lyrics that moved me, while with some it was their voice. But Lana seems to have it all; the lazy and sexy voice mixed with the perfect lyrics to make me feel nostalgic or depressed. It’s truly beautiful, one day I’d like to try to cover her songs but of course I know I can’t even attempt to imitate her voice. She is now on my list of female role models alongside Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana.

Maybe I will try doing a cover of this, but at the same time I don’t want to do any disrespect to her song haha.

Until then, Jellyfish out~
