Marina and the Diamonds: Electra Heart

Published May 13, 2013 by proxycore

Hello water creatures of all sizes, shapes and colour! And humans as well~

The Overlord has been rather fed up lately. It is already so close to the end of the year that I can’t really bring myself to do schoolwork anymore. The hot weather and impending freedom that the summer promises has already completely melted what I had of a brain. But not to worry! I still have the remnants of what resembles a heart. That is…before Marina and the Diamonds stole it away.

After stumbling upon the song ‘Primadonna’ through one of Michelle Phan’s make up tutorials on YouTube, I was addicted to it for a good few weeks. But it wasn’t until lately that I explored her other songs, and by now I can almost say I love her as much as Lana Del Rey. I was listening to her Album ‘Electra Heart’, and I was surprised to find that I actually loved every song on the album. This is a rather rare occurrence, as usually there are a couple songs that I don’t really favor an any given album, even the ones by my favorite artists (except for Lana of course). Marina has a voice that is distinct and a look that is unique. My new favorite song by her is called ‘Starring Role’.

‘It almost feels like a joke to play out the part
When you are not the starring role in someone else’s heart
You know I’d rather walk alone, than play a supporting role
If I can’t get the starring role.’

The lyrics are really perfect. Lana and Marina are the two artists who have consistently been able to touch me with their lyrics. My second favorite song on the album right now is probably going to have to be ‘State of Dreaming’. The first thing that caught my attention was how different her voice seemed in this song. It was a lot softer than her other songs. The second thing that drew me in was how perfect the lyrics seemed to adhere to me. It’s true, the talent of an artist really is dependent on how they connect to their audience through their words.

‘I live my life inside a dream
Only waking when I sleep
I would sell my sorry soul, if I could have it all’

It’s amazing how these lyrics seems to connect so intimately to each individual, yet still connects to so many people. Maybe one day, I can create lyrics that are like this as well haha.

Anyways ladies and gentlemen, Marina and the Diamonds.

The Great Gatsby: Young and Beautiful

Published May 9, 2013 by proxycore

Hello mer-folk and land-walkers~

So…I guess I unintentionally lied to everyone. It seems that there wasn’t something special posted after the IB exams on my birthday. Well as an explanation for that, for some reason I couldn’t get the programs I used for recording to actually work with my microphone and not mess with sound quality. I fiddled around with it for the previous weekend but I couldn’t figure out what exactly was the problem. But the good thing now is that I’ve gotten my desktop running and hopefully things will work better there! I’ll try to give it a shot again this weekend~

The Yeti microphone is amazing though, I can use the headphone jack directly built into the mic to hear myself while I record. Needless to say, the quality I hear from the headphones is significantly better than the one my programs record for some reason. It was so good that when I used the microphone on Skype with my friends, they could hear me opening and closing my mouth (like the moisture from my mouth or something). Thoroughly embarrassing….. but it is a good indicator for how well the microphone picks things up.

Anyways, onto some content. Does anyone ever notice how when the heat of summer comes along and the end of the school year arrives, people just end up becoming limp bodies and nothing you plan gets done? I had planned to watch Ironman 3 but that keeps getting postponed…. I was convinced that I would watch it opening night but clearly that didn’t happen. Oh well, I will watch it within the month.

Another movie is coming to theaters tomorrow that has been getting quite a bit of attention lately. You’ve guessed it, it is the only movie where you can see Spider-man acting with the boy from Titanic while listening to some Lana Del Rey; ‘The Great Gatsby’.

I’m not to sure on whether or not I want to see this movie though, it looks quite interesting and it’s hard to pass up anything with a time frame around the Roaring Twenties. Where else are you going to enjoy the ideas of a flourishing economy and beautiful jazz music all mixed in with the perfect amount of crime and rum-running? Either way, the movie is still based off of a book and generally I would prefer to read the book before seeing the movie. Either way, I will most definitely have to watch it eventually. Lana Del Rey had sealed the deal.

Like pretty much every other Lana Del Rey, this one is a masterpiece. I had given a shot at covering a couple of her songs like ‘Radio’ and ‘This is what makes us girls’ and it just didn’t come out right. And it wasn’t just because the sound quality was compromised, Lana’s songs are hard to properly cover. Maybe when I have more training…

Until then,

Lana Del Rey

Hello again water creatures and land monsters~

This is probably the first time I’ve posted so closely together. I was told by my friend that I should post more often so here it is! I’m going to try to post 3 or more times a week and hopefully be able to keep more people entertained. Anyways, today I’d like to introduce to everyone the latest artist that I’ve fallen in love with.

A while back while searching up serial killer documentaries on Youtube (I can’t be the only one who does this…it’s interesting stuff after all!), I came across Lana’s song ‘Serial Killer’. I instantly fell in love with it, the lyrics and her voice was perfect and of course I could joke around saying it was a song about me. Don’t worry, I’m not really a serial killer….that you know of at least ~

After that I’ve been listening to more and more of her other songs, and let me just say that she is a true poet. Her lyrics are perfect and her music delivers emotions to me that no other artist can. When I chose music to listen to, I generally look for artists that can move me strongly. With some artists it was their lyrics that moved me, while with some it was their voice. But Lana seems to have it all; the lazy and sexy voice mixed with the perfect lyrics to make me feel nostalgic or depressed. It’s truly beautiful, one day I’d like to try to cover her songs but of course I know I can’t even attempt to imitate her voice. She is now on my list of female role models alongside Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana.

Maybe I will try doing a cover of this, but at the same time I don’t want to do any disrespect to her song haha.

Until then, Jellyfish out~

Blue (Japanese Ver.) Cover

Published March 24, 2012 by proxycore

Hello members of JK and random passerby-ers! I know what you all are thinking: ‘WOAH! She’s NOT DEAD!’. Yes, I know it’s been much too long since I’ve updated but better late than never, right?

I know life of a jellyfish may not seem that complex, but it really is rather busy. It’s hard to get things done without muscles of any sort. But now I’ve returned with something that will hopefully make up for the previous silence of this blog.

So, your overlord has been sick lately, but that didn’t stop her from doing what she did today. And that is, drum roll please, enter the Big Bang ‘Blue’ Cover competition with Dolcette!

This was my first attempt at recording music, unlike my infinitely more experienced partner. So needless to say….things weren’t as good as they should be. Not only was I already sick, I was also very nervous. I had to take a good two hours to get my parts down when BBJia got her good copy on the first try. This was also a spur of the moment thing, we originally weren’t going to make a cover of ‘Blue’.

So while we were organizing the lyrics, we realized that we had a lot of difficulty with the Korean. Neither of us speak Korean and trying to was just making us butcher the language. Instead, we looked to an English version. However, we found creating the English lyrics was simply too much trouble. Finally, we decided to try the Japanese version, which I still messed up with my horrid pronunciation…..No matter, that was the version we used! Plus, for some odd reason this song sounds a lot cuter in Japanese!

At this point, since we entered the competition so late (and because my vocal skills are not up to par), I doubt that we will actually come close to winning. It’s fun to enter anyways, isn’t that right? Again, please excuse my horrible Japanese pronunciation. BBJia is really good at this and she also covers other Japanese songs. You should check out her channel at JPopSky.

Thanks for tuning in guys! I know I’m not great in this song but I promise I will be better next time =) I will practice lots and lots for you guys and try not to get sick ❤ Until next time~

Instrumentals~

Published February 21, 2012 by proxycore

Hello my few followers and some wanderers of the internet. Jellyfish has to bring to you another update for Dolcette after a wait that is slightly overdue. So unfortunately, the recording isn’t done yet like BBJia and me have planned, but we decided it isn’t really fair to leave some of you guys hanging like this. So behold, the first gift that Dolcette is going to give you guys. We were planning on recording one of our originals, but truthfully it isn’t finished yet. So here is the work in progress of the instrumental.

Please ignore the fact that the Video states that it is finish, even though it’s just an instrumental, it isn’t finished yet. We are going to do some adjusting once the melody is figured out and the lyrics are. Sounds pretty simple (yet awesome) right? Well I can’t take any credit for this. BBJia was the one who created the whole instrumental so far. Maybe I should post a preview for the lyrics and melody sometime soon! And for those who don’t like it? Well don’t be expecting that much, this is just a pilot after all.

Now we were also thinking of covering a song called “Secret base ~君がくれたもの~”. But things kept on coming up during our planned recording dates and we simply haven’t gotten to that yet. So here’s the instrumental we plan on using to cover.

Haha, I feel like I am showing too much right now. When we actually post our recordings there will be no surprise at all. That’s ok, if it helps your guys not get bored, I will inform you that the original song will at least have some changes in the instrumental.

Well that’s pretty much it for the update! Hopefully the cover will be out relatively soon and the original shortly after! So enjoy this tiny gifts we give you! Until next time~

Dolcette

Greetings my minions. Your overlord has yet another message =P

So I have been planning this for a while, but it has only been put into action (much like this blog). So drum roll please everyone…..

Me and my good friend BBJia have started a music group called Dolcette (pronounced /’dol.sɛt/). The origin of the name comes from the latin words Dolce, meaning sweet, and Dulcet, meaning a sweet, pleasant and melodious. So together, it can mean “a sweet and pleasant melody”. Perfect for a music group name, don’t you think? Now we have been planning this for…a good five months, give or take a few weeks. We’ve been through a few names, like Citrus^3, but those got boring pretty quickly. I think this one’s a keeper though!

Now the name came a little bit late. Currently. me and BBJia are already in the process of composing our first original. The instrumental is finished, but the melody and lyrics still have to be worked out. I’m quite excited to see how it turns out! I have a feeling that with the set of long weekends coming up, we may get it done and recorded within a few weeks. So keep in tune and I will keep you guys posted. We are also working on a couple covers. But everything recorded will be posted on our youtube channel at http://www.youtube.com/DolcetteMusic, as well as on here on my blog~ There isn’t anything on the channel yet, but I can promise you that there will be something worth looking at there in the possibly near future….I hope.

At this point, I’m not really sure how it’s going to turn out. Anything can happen. I have great trust in the equipment we are using, which is FL studio and the Blue Snowball Mic (c), but….not so much trust in my own voice. Haha~ I’m sure BBJia can carry anyways =P Just joking! No pressure on you Jia! But we aren’t using any other equipment, and we are letting the computer generate all of the parts. Just in case the music comes out a bit….robotic? Could you describe it like that? But that doesn’t matter, most music nowadays are all computer generated anyways. So I guess we really don’t have an excuse if it sounds bad.~

So stick around. Check out what we have when it comes out. But that’s all I got to say for now, thanks for reading guys!
